Game 6: The Stakes

Laugh it up, boys

If there is a God, he watches basketball. He is a Mavericks fan. He gave Mark Cuban the idea of streaming video. He is good. He is sovereign. He has touched the gold mane of Dirk Nowitzki.

If there is a God, the Miami Heat will not win this series.

The Miami Heat cannot win this series. Unless the universe as we know it is in fact completely devoid of rhyme, reason, good, evil. I cannot live in a system like this – be part of a humanity in which the punks on South Beach upend the feel-good story of the year with their brazen hotdogging, sophomoric in-jokes, low class, pimped-out three-piece suits, fake coughing, pre-season parades, party planning, 4th quarter no-showing. Winners do not act like this. Champions do not act like this. People with dignity do not act like this.

Dallas must win.

And if they do win – and they might – my faith, your faith, your children’s faith in humanity will be restored. We can go on living in a cosmos with cause and effect, with consequences, repercussions, with supposed tos, with karma. Whatever you want to call it. Miami – that smug, self-aggrandizing crew of premature showboaters with fat coffers and fatter egos – will go back to the cosmic drawing board, reassess this ‘me first’ attitude, take a lump, eat a plate of crow, take their medicine, maybe trade Chris Bosh, and know for sure what the 60-year history of professional basketball has long proved to the rest of us: titles don’t just happen. They’re earned.

The Miami Heat don’t deserve to win this title. Their “fans” don’t deserve to win this title. And this glitzy city doesn’t deserve Mr. O’Brien’s trophy, if only because we’d boil it down to make rimz for J-Lo’s Bentley.

Dallas, on the other hand – they have the long-suffering Cuban, the longer-suffering Dirk, the still longer-suffering Kidd. They’re built of castoffs, shoulder chips, smurfs, guys whose prime’s filed papers some time at the end of last decade. This is a team that seems to give meaning to cliche – wanting it more, playing your own game, having the heart of a champions, etcetera.

LeBron can’t backdoor his way into history. He can’t talent his way to greatness. He can’t give us this hokey show of contrived emotion and expect us to think it’s real. He can’t fake Michael Jordan. He can’t goof his way into the pantheon. And he can’t score 11 points in five 4th quarters and go expecting this whole godforsaken shebang to work out in his favor simply because he’s King James.

Now is the time for the forces that be to show who’s boss. Now is the time for should to conquer, for perseverance to prevail, for Flash to hit the links, for Cleveland to rejoice. Fate is on the side of Texas. Here’s to the Heat freezing over, lest hell, come Tuesday, do the same.

Amen. Thanks for articulating perfectly what I’ve been thinking…and what I’ve thought of the Yankees for years.

‘Fro,

Well said! This piece is all the more beautiful to read today (sorry I missed it yesterday) after the Miami Heat were systematically dismantled by a group of grown men!

You know, FWIW, I can’t think of any great player (and one that was a PROVEN champion) that acted so childish as this group in all the years that I have watched the NBA. Maybe a healthy dose of maturity will help this set of millennials. Until then, they’re simply not great, nor are they champions

Jonathan – have you ever heard of Ray Lewis or Plaxico Burress? The pros are littered with idiots who are “champions”. I like Jason Kidd and am happy for him but he pleaded guilty to spousal abuse so let’s keep this in perspective. Some of the antics by Lebron and others were embarrassing but they lost because Dallas wanted it more, executed when it mattered most, and made more of their free throws count. A parallel would be like saying that the U lost to Penn State in the Fiesta Bowl because they were wearing fatigues vs. Vinny throwing five pics in addition to the team losing two fumbles. Spoelstra and Lebron need to figure out how to get Lebron moving without the ball and to the free throw line more. Shooting threes all series long (with the best three point shooter – James Jones – on the bench, spelled doom.

Q,

I think you missed my point. But I certainly grasp yours.

That said, my comment pertained to the truly great NBA players of the past and even those of recent years. It was also intended to refer to those players that have shown they are great champions winning multiple championships. Hence, my statement “I can’t think of any great player (and one that was a PROVEN champion) that acted so childish as this group in all the years that I have watched the NBA“. The NFL or NCAA provides too man examples of the childish behaviors that you so easily point out.

Also, I’m not attempting to incorporate the criminally stupid antics of those you mention, as well as numerous others, in “childish behavior”. Rather, I am referring to the antics that this team displayed, which included mocking Dirk or acting like they’re so hip to media propaganda that they set the whole thing highlighted in ‘Fro’s picture to this post.

I hope this team grows from this experience. But let’s be clear, LJ is NO MJ!

J

PS Next year will be even more interesting to watch the master architect, Riley, try to re-structure this team. Maybe it will include a new coach. Sorry, but I’ve never been a fan of boy wonder. He’s no Pat Riley, Phil Jackson, Chuck Daily, KC Jones, Rudy Tomjanovich, or even Rick Carlisle. And let’s not forget, this wasn’t RC’s first rodeo.

The NBA gods never fail and for that reason, betting the NBA is fairly easy.

Would love your take on this (http://sportschump.net/2011/06/13/miami-hate-trying-to-make-sense-of-our-feelings-for-lebron/6606/), by the way.

Jonathan – have you ever heard of Dennis Rodman?

And I have not met a person that compares LBJ to MJ…so why do you and so many feel like it should be said?

Like I said before, I get your point. I’m not sure you got mine. Glad you can recall the likes of Rodman. His dress wearing was unexplainable… The green hair comical. And the various other antics… no further comment.

But still, I want to be clear here, even DR WON several championships – 5 as I recall! The Heat haven’t and James has yet to win 1. And I don’t recall DR falling as flat as this group did at times in the finals. That said, I’m sure you’re going to have a game you can recall where he did. My ONLY responses is he won SEVERAL championships.

At the end of the day, it’s just a basketball game. I shared my frustration with the immaturity displayed by LJ or DW or others. The world continues to turn. And I’m entitled to my view on this, just like you are.

As for the LJ to MJ comparisons, maybe it has a lot to do with the way he’s been marketed. Or maybe because I was born in Cleveland, and grew up listening to the radio broadcasts of the Cavs with Bill Fitch in the 1970′s as the Coach or even Lenny Wilkens in the 1990′s, so I’ll stick to my views.

Regardless, this doesn’t matter anymore. Terrell Pryor apologized today, Drew Rosenhaus assures us all that all is right, and OSU’s new head coach knew nothing.

Sounds like a perfect time for a Hogan’s Heroes’ re-run!

Ciao to all.

The more important (and current) question is, who will win tonight’s Stanley Cup showdown? RPD has to be going crazy! And what a great series.
